Disposable cell phones have made keeping in contact with friends and family very easy. If you have a portable MP3 player with WiFi capabilities, you can use wireless Internet overseas as well.
Purchasing a travel plug adapter with a USB charger will make it easy to keep these gadgets in your backpack, ready to use.
Many cafes have computers with online connections making it easy to keep in touch without bringing a laptop with you while backpacking around the world.
