A camper van rental is a great vacation money saver, because not only are you saving on accommodation, but you'll also save on gas. The fuel economy on most camper vans is similar to a large SUV.
So, yes, you may spend between $40-$70 a day on gas, but you'll also be saving that much on your accommodations and gaining an experience. Besides, it's only marginally more than the amount of gas you'd use in a standard-sized sedan.

With locations in San Francisco and Los Angeles, California Campers is ready to equip you.
They stock a number of Volkswagen Westfalia camper vans that get between 18 to 21 miles to the gallon. Their prices start at $90 a day and $600 for a week.
Their prices include 100 miles per day. Extra miles are 35 cents per mile or you can opt for unlimited mileage for an extra $35 per day – the recommended option if you're planning on doing any long-distance coastal travelling.

Cruise America offers a number of camper van rental options from compact RVs to full-sized options. Their prices vary depending on your geographic region and mileage.
