Camping First Aid Kits

When they are going out on a camping trip, most people don’t stop to think about all that can go wrong. But, like with any other physical activity, injury can occur while you are camping.

In fact, camping can be doubly dangerous. After all, if you are off hiking in the deep woods, miles from anywhere and get hurt, having camping first aid kits could be critical.

The Basic Unit

With any type of camping first aid kits, you want it to have antiseptics, bandages and wipes, an instant cold pack, something for wounds and moleskin for blisters. You shouldn’t just think one type of bandage will be enough either.

Having butterfly bandages as well as triangular ones is advisable to cover a variety of injuries. Plenty of gauze pads, an instruction book and eye pads are also good to have. Many times, these kits will also have splints to set fractures and depending on the area you are visiting, a snake bite kit is advisable.

Then there are the ointments and lotions for treating poison ivy or other allergic reactions. Also, you should never underestimate the usefulness of a simple pair of tweezers, scissors and a knife in camping first aid kits.

Then there are the basic medications to bring along: pain relievers, anti-diarrhea medicine, and antacids to settle an upset stomach. The last thing you want is for a vacation to be spoiled by something as small as a splinter or upset stomach and getting your camping first aid kits right can help to avoid that.

If children are going to be part of your group, make sure that your camping first aid kits includes items to treat them. Bring along children’s Benadryl, Motrin, and some sort of decongestant.

Top of the Line Kits

If you are going on an extended trip, or one that will take you very far from civilization, you might want to consider bringing camping first aid kits that have even more items in them.

There are models out there that have automatic external defibrillators for heart attacks, air splints to immobilize a broken bone and even a blood pressure cuff.

Of course, if you are really careful and thorough, as well as camping first aid kits you will make sure to have cell phone and a two-way radio with you. These days, a good cell phone can get a signal almost anywhere, but you can never be too careful.

So, some sort of radio-transmitter is best. Also, consider bringing along a GPS unit. In the event of a medical emergency, you will want to be able to give the authorities your exact location. Remember, in a critical situation, every minute is important, no matter how good your camping first aid kits.
