Simple Survival Gear for Outdoor Adventures

Outdoor survival gear is essential for anybody going on a camping, hiking or mountain climbing trip.

If you are heading out into any kind of wilderness or unknown terrain, you have to ensure your safety.

When you are going on an outdoor vacation where you face challenges like changing temperatures, the possibility of inclement weather, dealing with wildlife, navigating unknown areas and geographical isolation.

While most vacations don't end up with the worst possible scenarios playing out, it's always best to be on the safe side and bring some basic outdoor survival gear.

Whether you are going out for a few hours or a few days, there is always the possibility of getting lost or hurt.

So you should bring along some simple outdoor survival gear that will keep you safe and warm, and will help you find your way back to where you came or find help.

Stay Safe & Warm

If you are just going for a hike, or if you are backpacking through the mountains or forest, make sure you bring some extra clothing with you. A light, waterproof jacket is a necessity for any hike.

An extra change of clothes can make all the difference if you are caught in bad weather or fall somewhere wet. Especially if the temperature drops suddenly.

You should also keep a first aid kit in your outdoor survival gear in case you take a fall or tumble while you are walking.

You should also bring along waterproof matches or a lighter, an emergency blanket and even a large, orange garbage bag that you can use to crawl into and keep dry.

An orange bag is preferable to a black or brown one, as it will stand out from the environment and make you easy to find.

Sources of Light

A flashlight is a must-have in your outdoor survival gear on any hiking or camping trip. Bring spare batteries and bulbs with you as well.

It is also good to bring along a candle and a candle lantern. While bulkier to travel with than a flashlight, it can help provide constant light at night.

Food & Water

Bring some extra food with you in your gear on any hiking and camping trips. You should not depend on nature for snacks along the way, as you can never be sure which berries or mushrooms can be harmful if ingested.

Bring along some trail mix or raisins, something that will keep your energy up and your belly full.

You should also make sure to bring along as much extra water as possible. Although it can be a bit of burden to carry, you will be glad to have it in an emergency.

Even if you don't get lost and you don't need it for survival, staying hydrated while you are walking around the wilderness is important.

Getting Direction

You should always carry a compass with you, even if you have a portable GPS with you. It is one of the most important pieces of outdoor survival gear. You should also have a map of the location you are hiking or camping in.

It can be impossible to correctly read a map of an unfamiliar place with no dependable way to get an accurate read of directors.

Unless you are well trained in getting directional signs from nature, a compass may be the only way to help get you back on track.

Getting Attention

If you are lost in a remote area, it is important to try to bring attention to yourself in case there are unseen people nearby who can assist you.

A whistle is a light, easy to carry piece of outdoor survival gear. Three blows on a whistle is a known distress signal.
