Outdoor Survival Kits:

Survival Kit Essentials for Outdoor Camping

Outdoor survival kits are about more than throwing a few bandages in a bag and calling it a day. Before you head out on any camping expedition, whether it’s a day-long hike or a month-long adventure, you should plan and pack your survival kit as your first priority. For a list of some outdoor survival kits’ essentials, keep reading.

Navigational Tools

While many modern-day campers rely on GPS (Global Positioning System) technology and marked trails, you should still pack a waterproof map of the area and a working compass.

Most national parks and camping areas will provide a map of all marked trails and campsites. Make sure you grab a copy for each member of your party, marking a rendez-vous spot should you become separated.

Emergency Fire-Starters

While many campgrounds and national parks don’t allow fires, smart campers still pack emergency fire-starting supplies as part of their outdoor survival kits. Waterproof matches and one or two commercial fire-starters should be all you need.

First Aid Supplies

Any good survival kit has the essential first aid supplies; bandages, gauze, disinfectant, antiseptic cream, tweezers, safety pins, backup medication supplies, and a comprehensive, easy-to-understand first aid guidebook.

However remember, a survival kit is designed to be small and kept on your person at all times, not in your pack. For essentials and a smaller pack size, just pack a length of gauze and antiseptic wipes.

Whistle and Flares

In case you’re injured or lost, a whistle or flare can help signal your position to rescue workers or park rangers. While day hikers may want to carry a small whistle on their key chain, anyone heading out on a longer expedition should pack a few flares in their outdoor survival kits. You may also want to pack a crayon or something to mark trees in case you become lost.

Water Purification Tablets

Have one or two water purification tablets on hand in case you need to purify your water supply. Also try packing outdoor survival kits inside a small metal container. You can then use that same container to boil and sterilize your drinking water.
