Tent Lighting:

Let There be Tent Lighting

In the beginning…there was light; but that faded much earlier than expected. Can you think of anything worse than trying to erect a tent in the wind and the rain? I can: it’s trying to set up a tent in the wind and the rain and the dark. The right sort of tent lighting gets you over that particular little occupational hazard of many a camping expedition. Because of course, tent lighting can be used before putting up the tent, you don’t need to have your tent up to feel the benefit of good tent lighting.

Light up in Style

Tent lighting can usually be found in gas or battery; which of these you choose depends on the type of camping you expect to be doing and how much other equipment you will need to carry.

Gas Tent Lighting

Gas lanterns usually give the brightest tent lighting. However don’t worry about them burning up your cash too; you can adjust the light when you don’t need it to be so bright, so you can conserve fuel and save money.  One of the benefits of gas tent lighting is that it usually works better than battery powered tent lighting does in cold weather. They work on butane, kerosene, butane or dual fuel. The latter – duel fuel gas tent lighting – is probably the most environmentally friendly as they can be run on unleaded gas. Think of the economy factor and perhaps find gas tent lighting that uses the same fuel as you use in your camping stove.

A Few Things to Bear in Mind

Obviously, any fuel you would use in your gas tent lighting is extremely flammable. Make sure that whenever you change fuel sources that you are well away from flames or heat sources. Also, of course, remember that the gas canisters themselves become hot, so be very careful how you handle them.

You will need to have either an electric ignition or matches and mantels to light the gas tent lighting and you may also need a carrying case, which is rarely included. A great added extra is a reflector to direct heat back into your tent from above.

However, if you’re going to be hiking as well as camping, gas tent lighting really isn’t a viable option and you’ll need to go for a battery-powered option.

Battery-Powered Tent Lighting

The convenience of battery-powered tent lighting makes up for its other deficiencies. There are many available sizes and you can find battery-powered tent lighting that uses virtually any battery, so getting hold of the power supply will never be a problem. They have adjustable brightness and while battery-powered tent lighting may not throw out light with the intensity of its gas-powered counterparts, you should be more than satisfied with the results and they provide a highly safe alternative source of tent lighting.
