Safety
Perhaps the most important thing to consider when you are picking out travel trailer mattresses is whether they meet safety standards. Travel trailer mattresses must meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 302.
This means that all travel trailer mattresses must be flame retardant. Flame retardant materials are not necessarily used in the manufacturing of mattresses made for your home bed or sofa couch, so you cannot simply take a mattress from home and use it on the road.
Sizes
Unlike traditional home mattresses that only come in twin, full, queen and king sizes, travel trailer mattresses come in unconventional sizes as well.
While specialty sizes may end up costing you a little more money, having a mattress that fits perfectly into the design of your travel trailer will make up for what extra money you spend.
Since some travel trailers require custom made mattresses, there are companies and online vendors who will make travel trailer mattresses that will both fit properly and meet safety standards.
If you purchase a custom made mattress, you can determine the thickness and support strength based on your personal needs.
Sheets & Bedding
Because you might be custom ordering a travel trailer mattress, it is also possible to order customized bedding to fit your oddly sized mattress. Most vendors who sell custom mattresses also sell custom bedding.
If you are into do-it-yourself projects you could also simply head to a local fabric store, find material that you like or material like fleece that will make sleeping outdoors more comfortable, and tailor make the bedding for your own travel trailer mattresses.
